Saint Ephrem the Syrian (c. 306 – c. 378)

Early Life and Conversion

Ephrem the Syrian was born around 306 AD in Nisibis, Mesopotamia, to likely pagan parents. At the age of 18 (or 28), he converted to Christianity and became a disciple of Saint Jacob, Bishop of Nisibis.

Deacon and Preacher

Ephrem was ordained as a deacon but never became a priest. His powerful sermons played a crucial role in encouraging the defenders of Nisibis during the three Persian sieges of the city.

Flight to Edessa

After Nisibis was captured in 363 AD, Ephrem fled to Edessa, where he spent the rest of his life preaching and practicing repentance.

Theological Writings

Ephrem's exegetical and dogmatic writings were highly influential in the East. His hymns, renowned for their mystical and poetic beauty, continue to be used in Syrian liturgical practices.

Commemoration

Saint Ephrem the Syrian is commemorated on June 9th (January 28th in the Russian Orthodox Church). His memory is revered for his contributions as a teacher of the Church, a fearless preacher, and a gifted theologian.
