Early Life and EducationAndra Day, whose real name is Cassandra Monique Batie, was born in Spokane, Washington, on December 30, 1984. Her family moved to San Diego, California, when she was three years old. Day developed her artistic abilities at an early age, joining the choir at United Methodist Church in Chula Vista and studying dance for 15 years. She attended Valencia Park Elementary School, where she became acquainted with jazz vocalists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Washington. Day went on to attend the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.
Musical Career
After graduating from college, Day worked in various jobs before becoming a children's entertainer. In 2010, she was discovered by Kai Millard Morris, the former wife of singer Stevie Wonder, who recommended her to music industry executives. Day gained attention for her covers of popular songs and mashups, including Eminem's "Lose Yourself" and Amy Winehouse's "Rehab."
Breakthrough and Debut Album
Day released her original material in 2014 and debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. She caught the attention of Spike Lee, who directed the music video for her song "Forever Mine" and arranged for her to perform at events such as the Essence Festival, the BET Awards, and "Good Morning America." Day's debut album, "Cheers to the Fall," was released in August 2015, debuting on the Billboard 200 chart. The single "Rise Up" earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance.
Continued Success and Film Debut
Day toured extensively to promote "Cheers to the Fall" and recorded a duet with Stevie Wonder, titled "Someday at Christmas." She performed at the White House in 2015 and sang for the opening night of the Democratic National Convention in 2016. The following year, she released the soundtrack to the legal drama "Marshall." Her duet "Stand Up for Something" with rapper Common received an Oscar nomination.
