Biography of Andre Courreges

Andre Courreges (Andre Courreges, March 9, 1923) is a French fashion designer known for his ultramodern creations. At the age of 25, after completing a course in civil engineering, Andre moved to Paris where he worked in design at the house of Geanne Lafaurie. He later moved under the wing of renowned Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga. Some sources claim that it was Andre Courreges who invented the miniskirt, although others attribute this invention to British designer Mary Quant.

Maison de Couture

In 1961, Andre created his own fashion house, Maison de Couture. In 1964, Courreges released his legendary "space collection". It was already clear that Andre preferred to create garments that were quite unusual for the fashion world – from the outside, it seemed that his creations were not so much sewn as they were constructed. In all of Courreges' designs, strict geometric shapes such as squares, trapezoids, and triangles were dominant. He incorporated sunglasses, boots, and embroidered trimmings into his costumes. Despite their unassuming appearance and clumsiness, his designs quickly became popular in the world of high fashion. One of his most well-known creations were miniskirts, which gained popularity in France thanks to Andre.

High-Tech Materials and Experimental Designs

Andre Courreges favored materials that belonged to the world of high technology. His favorites were plastics and metal, although he also used PVC. Metallic colors such as silver, white, yellow, and red completed the overall ensemble, creating a visual appeal that was impossible to ignore. It is important to note that the main clients of major fashion houses were always mature women. However, most of Courreges' works, such as miniskirts, were clearly aimed at much younger wearers.

Innovative Fashion and Perfumes

In 1966, Andre launched a new line of perfumes. In 1967, his form-fitting outfits conquered the entire fashion world and continue to be successful even today. While achieving this success, Courreges continued to experiment and create new costumes. He released knitted pants and parkas, tennis skirts, beachwear, and mechanical-looking clothing. None of his projects resembled the previous one, and each had its own unique touch. From closed jersey garments that glowed in the dark to the most sensual swimsuits held on the body by delicate strings, Andre's clothing continued to dominate with its acid colors and geometric shapes. Some designs even softened the intensity of his creations to give them a more "everyday" look.

Architectural Influence and Techno-Modernism

Modern architecture and technology had a tremendous influence on Andre's creativity. He had an incredible interest in new fabrics, inventions, and the latest trends in modernism and futurism. Courreges had followers as well. Coco Chanel often sought the help of contemporary artists, and Mary Quant also incorporated many of the brilliant French designer's solutions. However, Courreges took techno-fashion to a qualitatively new level, pushing the boundaries of techno-modernizing garments further than anyone else dared.
