Early Life and Education

Andrei Konstantinovich Geim was born into a family of German and Russian heritage in Sochi, Russia. Despite facing anti-Semitism due to his surname, Geim excelled in his studies and attended a specialized English language school in Nalchik. After failing to gain admission to the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, he enrolled in the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Research and Academic Career

Geim earned his Ph.D. degree in 1987 and conducted research at the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He held positions at various institutions in the former Soviet Union, Europe, and the United Kingdom, including the University of Nottingham and the University of Bath.

Move to the Netherlands and Nobel Prize

In 1994, Geim became an assistant professor at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and later obtained Dutch citizenship. While there, he met his future collaborator, Konstantin Novoselov. Frustrated with the hierarchical nature of Dutch science, Geim moved to the University of Manchester in 2001 and became a professor of physics.

In 2004, Geim and Novoselov published groundbreaking research on the isolation of single-atom layers of carbon known as graphene. This discovery earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. Graphene is an extremely thin yet remarkably strong material with potential applications in electronics, energy storage, and medicine.

Other Honors and Legacy

Geim has also received the Ig Nobel Prize in 2001 for his experiments on levitation using diamagnetism. He is the first scientist to have won both the Nobel Prize and the Ig Nobel Prize, which he playfully attributes to his ability to appreciate humor.
