Early Life and Education

André Armand Vingt-Trois was born in Paris, France, on November 7, 1942, to Armand and Paulette (née Villaumy) Vingt-Trois. He completed his secondary education at the Lycée Henri IV and entered the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Issy-les-Moulineaux in 1962. He obtained a licentiate in moral theology from the Catholic Institute of Paris. From 1964 to 1965, he performed military service in Germany.

Ordination and Early Ministry

In October 1968, André Vingt-Trois was ordained a deacon by Daniel Pezeril, Titular Bishop of Reperi and Auxiliary Bishop of Paris. He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1969, by Cardinal François Marty, Archbishop of Paris. From 1969 to 1974, he focused on parish catechesis and adult education. From 1974 to 1981, Vingt-Trois served as a curate at the Saint-Jeanne de Chantal parish in Paris. He also served as the director of his alma mater, the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Issy-les-Moulineaux. From 1981 to 1988, he taught theology there. Vingt-Trois was involved in various pastoral movements, including the Centre de Préparation au Mariage. He was later appointed Vicar General of Paris, responsible for diocesan education, the media, family ministry, and catechesis.

Episcopal Ministry

On June 25, 1988, Vingt-Trois was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Paris and Titular Bishop of Thibilis by Pope John Paul II. His episcopal consecration took place on October 14, 1988, at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. On April 21, 1999, Vingt-Trois was appointed Archbishop of Tours.

Archbishop of Paris

On February 11, 2005, Vingt-Trois was appointed Archbishop of Paris. He was officially installed in Paris on March 5 and was named the Ordinary for French Catholics of Eastern Rites on March 14. On November 5, 2007, he was elected President of the French Episcopal Conference for a three-year term; he was reelected in 2010 and served until April 17, 2013.

Cardinalate

Pope Benedict XVI elevated Vingt-Trois to the cardinalate on November 24, 2007, with the Title of San Luigi dei Francesi. He was eligible to participate in any future conclaves until he reached the age of eighty on November 7, 2022. On June 12, 2008, in addition to his primary duties, Vingt-Trois was appointed by Benedict XVI as a member of the Congregations for Bishops and the Pontifical Council for the Family.

Later Years and Retirement

Vingt-Trois participated in the 2013 Conclave. On December 7, 2017, Pope Francis accepted Cardinal André Vingt-Trois's resignation as Archbishop of Paris.
