Andrea Leadsom: A British Politician

Early Life and Education

Andrea Leadsom was born on May 13, 1963, in England. She attended Tonbridge Grammar School and Warwick University, where she graduated in 1987.

Business Career

Prior to entering politics, Leadsom worked in finance, starting out as an office assistant in 1984. She later became a metals trader at E. F. Hutton & Co. and moved to Barclays de Zoete Wedd in 1987. In 1993, she became a director of institutional relations at Barclays, becoming the youngest director in the bank's history.

In 1997, Leadsom co-founded Bandal Limited, a property investment company, with her husband. She also served as a managing director of De Putron Fund Management Ltd. and worked in Invesco Perpetual's corporate governance team.

Political Career

Leadsom entered politics in 2003 when she joined the South Oxfordshire District Council. She was elected as a Conservative MP for South Northamptonshire in 2010 and served as Economic Secretary to the Treasury from 2014 to 2015.

2016 Referendum and Conservative Leadership Bid

In 2016, Leadsom campaigned for Brexit in the EU referendum. She later announced her candidacy for leader of the Conservative Party, hoping to replace David Cameron. However, she withdrew her candidacy in July 2016.

Role in Theresa May's Governments

In Theresa May's government, Leadsom served as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from 2016 to 2017 and then as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council from 2017 to 2019. She resigned from the latter role in May 2019 due to disagreements with May's Brexit deal.

Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

In Boris Johnson's government, Leadsom was appointed Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in July 2019. She was removed from the role in February 2020 during a cabinet reshuffle.

Personal Life

Andrea Leadsom is married to Ben Leadsom, a property developer. They have two sons and a daughter.
