Early Life and Athletic Career
Bernd Wieczorek was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany, and began his athletic journey as a hammer thrower. In 1975, he set a personal best of 65.22 meters in the event.
Transition to Bobsleigh
In 1977, Wieczorek switched to bobsleigh, joining the army sports club ASK Vorwärts Oberhof. Under the guidance of coaches Erich Ender and Raimund Bethge, he honed his skills and became an officer in the National People's Army.
Olympic Success
In 1979, Wieczorek won the East German championship in the two-man bobsleigh and earned a bronze medal at the European Championships in the four-man event. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, he claimed a bronze medal in the four-man event. Four years later, in Sarajevo, he ascended to the top of the Olympic podium, winning gold in the four-man bobsleigh alongside Roland Wetzig, Wolfgang Hoppe, and Dietmar Schauerhammer.
International Dominance
Beyond his Olympic triumph, Wieczorek also achieved significant success at the world and European championships. In 1981, he won silver medals in both the two-man and four-man bobsleigh events. In 1982, he finished third in the two-man event at the World Championships and second at the European Championships.
Post-Career Pursuits
Following his retirement from bobsleigh in 1986, Wieczorek worked as a teacher in Suhl. He also attended the National University of Sport in East Germany and graduated with a degree in sports science.
