Andreas Jakobsson is a Swedish football player who played as a central defender or defensive midfielder. He began his professional football career at Landskrona BoIS. In 1993, he helped the team to promote to the Allsvenskan, the top league in Sweden. However, the following season, Landskrona finished 13th, second to last in the league, and was relegated back to Division 1. Jakobsson then moved to Helsingborg.
In the 1995 season, Helsingborg finished second in the Allsvenskan, marking their highest position in 40 years. Jakobsson played in all matches for Helsingborg in the 1996 and 1998 seasons. In the summer of 2000, he transferred to the German club Hansa Rostock. During the 2000/2001 season, the club finished 12th in the Bundesliga, with Jakobsson playing in all 34 matches. They finished 14th the following season and 13th the year after. After that, Jakobsson joined the Danish club Brondby.
Jakobsson helped Brondby reach the Round of 32 in the UEFA Cup, scoring two goals against Schalke 04. He was also sought after by the English club Ipswich Town, but the Swedish player declined the offer. On August 31, 2004, Jakobsson transferred to Southampton in England for 1.8 million euros. The season in England was unsuccessful, as Southampton finished last in the Premier League and were relegated to the Championship. However, they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. After that, Jakobsson returned to Helsingborg.
Back at Helsingborg, Jakobsson helped the club qualify for the UEFA Cup 2007/2008 and reach the playoffs. After the 2007 season, in which Jakobsson played in all matches for Helsingborg in the league, he decided to retire from professional football. In 2008, he played for the amateur club Svalov.
International Career
Jakobsson made his debut for the Swedish national team on February 28, 1996, in a friendly match against Australia. He became the starting central defender for the national team prior to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where he had to replace the injured Patrick Andersson. Jakobsson played all four matches for Sweden in the tournament without being substituted. He also played all four matches without substitution in the UEFA Euro 2004, forming a partnership with Olof Mellberg. Thanks to their performance, Sweden conceded only three goals. Jakobsson retired from international football after Euro 2004.
