Renato: A Brazilian Goalkeeping Legend
Early Career and Loan SpellsRenato began his professional football career at Flamengo in 1964. Despite his debut against Santos, he faced competition from established goalkeeper Marcial. To gain experience, he was sent on loan to Taubaté and Entrerriense.
Return to Flamengo and Transfer to Atlético Mineiro
In 1967, Renato returned to Flamengo as a backup goalkeeper. However, after a poor performance in a match against Guarani in 1968, he conceded five goals. The following year, he joined Uberlândia and was eventually purchased by Atlético Mineiro for $70,000. Under coach Telê Santana, Renato won the Minas Gerais State Championship in his first year and the Brazilian Championship in his second.
Return to Flamengo and International Debut
After the arrival of Uruguayan goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz, Renato returned to Flamengo. He won two Rio de Janeiro State Championships with the club and earned two caps for the Brazilian national team in 1973. He participated in the 1974 World Cup as the third-choice goalkeeper.
Later Clubs and Coaching Career
Renato went on to play for Fluminense, Bahia, and Al-Ahli in Dubai. After retiring, he settled in the UAE, where he worked as a goalkeeper coach. He also held coaching roles with Vasco da Gama, the Brazilian national team, and the Saudi Arabian national team.
Post-Coaching and Legacy
After his coaching career, Renato moved to Uberlândia and worked as a coordinator for a sports foundation. Today, he is a sports commentator on Rádio Cultura Uberlândia. Renato is married with three children and three grandchildren.
