Andrés Avelino Cáceres: Peru's Military Leader and Twice-Elected President

Early Career and Military Service

Andrés Avelino Cáceres was born in Arequipa, Peru, in 1836. He pursued a military career and distinguished himself in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883) against Chile.

First Presidency (1886-1890)

After helping to overthrow President Iglesias in December 1885, Cáceres was elected President on June 3, 1886. During his four-year term, Peru experienced a period of relative stability and peace.

Post-Presidency and Diplomatic Mission

Following the end of his presidency in 1890, Cáceres was appointed envoy to London by President Bermúdez. In 1894, after Bermúdez's death, Cáceres was re-elected President.

Second Presidency and Overthrow (1894-1895)

Unfortunately, Cáceres's second presidency was short-lived. He was overthrown in a rebellion in 1895 by Nicolás de Piérola, who became the new President.

Later Years

After his overthrow, Cáceres retired from politics and lived the rest of his life as a private citizen. He died in Lima, Peru, in 1923.
