Andrew Cuomo: A Leader in New York
Early Life and EducationBorn on December 6, 1957, Andrew Cuomo is the eldest son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo. He attended Archbishop Molloy High School and later pursued higher education at Fordham University and Albany Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree.
Political Career under Mario Cuomo
During his father's gubernatorial campaign, Cuomo served as his chief assistant. He subsequently held a top political advisor position in the Governor's Office throughout his father's 12-year tenure. Cuomo played a pivotal role in addressing homelessness and housing in New York during this period.
Federal Service in the Clinton Administration
In 1993, Cuomo joined President Bill Clinton's administration as Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Following the resignation of Henry Cisneros, Cuomo was appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in 1997, a position he held until 2001.
State Attorney General and Pursuit of the Governorship
In 2006, Cuomo ran for the Democratic nomination for New York Attorney General. He won the election with 58% of the vote and served as Attorney General from 2007 to 2010. During his tenure, he implemented measures against child pornography, abuse of power by public officials, and predatory student lending practices. He also opposed capital punishment.
On May 22, 2010, Cuomo announced his candidacy for Governor of New York. He won the Democratic nomination and the general election, taking office on January 1, 2011.

As Governor, Cuomo has focused on gun control, affordable housing, economic development, and education. He has also been criticized for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. He resigned from office in August 2021 amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
