Biography of Andrey Stoyanov

Andrey Nikolaevich Stoyanov was a lawyer born in 1830. He graduated from the law faculty at Kharkov University. In 1859, Stoyanov passed his master's exam and published his first work, "On the Ideal View of Society and the State," in Kalachov's "Archive." In 1862, he presented his dissertation on the methods of developing positive law and the societal significance of lawyers from the glossators to the end of the 18th century, earning him a high appraisal from the law faculty at Kharkov University.

Stoyanov was assigned abroad for two years in 1863. Until 1885, he held the chair of Legislative History at Kharkov University, where he also taught International Law, Legal Encyclopedia, and Roman Law. Known for his extensive erudition, clarity of exposition, and oratorical skills, Stoyanov was considered one of the best professors at Kharkov University. He followed the example of Taylor, Spencer, and Maine and focused on the comparative and historical methods of studying legal institutions.

Stoyanov's numerous studies were written in this direction, including "The Scientific Significance of Universal Legal History" (in "Legal Herald," 1879, II), "Historical Analogy and Points of Contact between New Legislation and Ancient Law" (Kharkov, 1883), "The Origins of Family Law among Primitive Peoples" (Kharkov, 1884), "On the Origins of Property and Obligational Law Institutions" ("Legal Herald," 1887, No. 10), "English Advocacy" (same, 1880, IV), "Society Manners and Courts in France" (Kharkov, 1876), and "The History of Advocacy among Ancient Peoples" (1869, doctoral dissertation). D.I. Kachenovsky highly praised this work as a "completely independent work distinguished by its predominantly critical direction."

In addition, Stoyanov wrote "Memoirs of D.I. Kachenovsky" (Kharkov, 1872, a large, heartfelt obituary) and an extensive study titled "Essays on the History and Dogmatics of International Law" (Kharkov, 1875; one of the best guides on this subject). In recent years, Stoyanov published several small and interesting articles: "From the History of Western European Universities" (Kharkov, 1891) and "From the History of Duels in Western Europe" (Kharkov, 1893). From 1876 to 1886, Stoyanov served as the dean of the Law Faculty. He frequently delivered public lectures and remained a representative of enlightenment and humanistic ideas in his scholarly and teaching activities.
