Andrew Latimer Biography

Andrew Latimer is a British musician and multi-instrumentalist, best known as one of the founders of the progressive rock band 'Camel'. He was born in Guildford, Surrey, and primarily plays guitar and sings, occasionally taking up the roles of keyboardist or flutist.

Talented Composer and Singer

Latimer's guitar playing is elegant, melodic, and heartfelt. He is widely regarded as an excellent composer, a talented songwriter, and above all, an incredibly sensitive singer. Despite receiving highly favorable reviews, including praise from veteran press members like Mark Challinor, both Latimer and his band were not able to achieve the success they deserved.

Unrecognized Talent

During that time, progressive rock was a fairly popular genre, with many talented artists working in the style. Unfortunately, Latimer and 'Camel' went relatively unnoticed among their peers. However, they did have their fans, including 'Marillion' guitarist Steve Rothery, who claimed that Latimer's music had a profound influence on his development as a musician.

Guitar and Equipment

Latimer usually played a 'Gibson Les Paul' guitar, although he also occasionally used other brands such as 'Fender Stratocaster'. From the 90s onwards, he often performed with a 'Burny Super Grade', a replica of the classic 'Gibson Les Paul' model. He used amplifiers from various brands, including 'Fender', 'Vox', and 'Marshall'.

Camel Productions and Health Struggles

At a certain point, Latimer decided he no longer wanted to solely focus on performing music. He established his own production company, 'Camel Productions', which released albums such as 'Dust And Dreams', 'Harbour of Tears', 'Rajaz', and 'A Nod and a Wink'.

In May 2007, Andrew's wife, Susan Hoover, shared some unfortunate news on the official 'Camel Productions' website. Latimer was diagnosed with a progressive blood disorder called polycythemia, which later progressed into myelofibrosis. This illness led to a reduction in 'Camel's' touring schedule.

In late 2007, Latimer underwent a bone marrow transplant, and although it took some time for him to recover, by September 2008, he was in excellent shape.
