Andrew Scott is an Irish theater and film actor, best known for his role as Jim Moriarty in the BBC series "Sherlock." He was born on October 21, 1976, in Dublin, Ireland, to Nora and Jim Scott. His father worked in an employment bureau, while his mother was an art teacher.

Scott grew up with two sisters and attended Gonzaga College, a private Catholic boys' school in South Dublin. From a young age, he took acting lessons and performed in youth theater productions. He also appeared in a few commercials on Irish television.

At the age of 17, Scott landed his first film role in "Korea." After finishing school, he briefly studied at Trinity College, Dublin, one of Ireland's most prestigious educational institutions, before dropping out to pursue a career in theater.

His breakthrough role came in the film adaptation of "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), directed by Steven Spielberg.
