Early Life and Education

Igor Afanasyev was born on November 17, 1953, in the Amur region. In 1956, his family relocated to Kyiv. Afanasyev pursued his studies concurrently at two faculties of the Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts named after I. K. Karpenko-Karyi, completing the acting faculty in 1975 and the directing faculty in 1977. He also graduated from the playwriting workshop of A. Arbuzov at the All-Union Institute for Advanced Training of Art Workers in Moscow from 1980 to 1981.

Theatrical Career in Ukraine

Afanasyev's theatrical endeavors included performing on the stage of the Kyiv National Academic Theater of Operetta, where he was the first to portray d'Artagnan in M. Dunaevsky's musical "The Three Musketeers." He also held the positions of artistic director at the Kyiv Music Hall, director and artistic director of the Kyiv Theater of Variety, and director-producer at the National Academic Dramatic Theater named after I. Franco.

Emigration to the United States

From 1993 to 2010, Afanasyev lived and worked in the United States. He created and hosted programs on the Russian-language television channel WMNB-NY, was director of WMNB's Ukrainian branch UBN, and produced the theater "Millennium" in New York City. In 2001, he established the production center "Teatr Igorya Afanasyeva."

Return to Ukraine and Career in Russia

Upon his return to Ukraine, Afanasyev served as director at the National Academic Dramatic Theater named after I. Franco from 2012 to 2014. In 2014, he relocated to Russia, where he has since held positions as director-producer at the Moscow State Theater of Variety and the Central Academic Theater of the Russian Army.

Playwriting and Theatrical Recognition

In 2015, Afanasyev penned the play "The Little People," which explores themes of life within the womb. The play received the blessing of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Cyril, and its scenic adaptation, "Forbidden Fruit," premiered in 2018. The production garnered critical acclaim, with its anti-abortion message resonating deeply with audiences.

Awards and Accolades

Afanasyev's playwriting prowess was recognized in 2019 when he won the international playwriting competition "Avtora na Stsenu." His play "Peter the Great: Flesh and Blood" earned a grant of one million rubles from the Russian Ministry of Culture for its staging. Theatrical adaptations of his plays have been performed in theaters across Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Israel, the United States, and Russia.

Career in Russian Cinema

Afanasyev made his debut in Russian cinema in 2005 and continued to work in the industry until his untimely passing on March 1, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer.
