Early Life and Activism

Alexander Vasilyevich Korvatsky was born in Kherson, Ukraine, either in 1843 or 1844. As a student at the Medico-Surgical Academy, he became embroiled in student unrest in 1868-1869. Accused of drafting proclamations, he was apprehended and incarcerated in the Peter and Paul Fortress. On March 29, 1869, upon order from the gendarmerie chief, Korvatsky was exiled to his hometown in the Kherson Governorate under police surveillance.

Release and Return to Medicine

Released from supervision in December 1871, Korvatsky obtained permission to reside freely. In July 1872, he received approval to travel abroad. In 1877, he completed his medical studies and obtained the title of physician. In the early 1900s, Korvatsky worked as a doctor in Melitopol.

Horticulture and Hydrogeology

Beyond his medical practice, Korvatsky pursued experimental horticulture and hydrogeological research. He established an experimental garden and nursery and discovered a deposit of therapeutic mineral water.

Death and Legacy

Korvatsky passed away in 1907 in Melitopol. In 2005, a monument was erected in his honor on Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Avenue. The fruit orchards in the Microdistrict are colloquially known as "Filliber's Gardens." The adjacent thoroughfare was recently named Korvatsky Drive.
