Biography of a Deputy in the Russian State Duma
Early Life and EducationIvan Schmidt was born in 1856 into a family of peasant landowners in the Ackerman district of Bessarabia. His ancestors were German colonists, and he was a Lutheran by faith. Schmidt completed his education at the Kamraz Central School.
Career in Agriculture and Local Government
After graduating, Schmidt dedicated himself to agriculture and viticulture. He became a member of the Ackerman district zemstvo council (local government) and served as a clerk for 29 years. Notably, he was elected a member of the district zemstvo assembly for 25 consecutive years from 1881 to 1906, and served on the council's governing board for three years.
Election to the State Duma
Schmidt's political activism culminated in his election as a deputy to the First State Duma of the Russian Empire in 1906. He represented the Bessarabian Governorate.
Later Life and Legacy
After his term in the Duma, Schmidt settled in Tarutino, where he passed away in 1931. His contributions to local government and agriculture left a lasting impact on his community.
