Biography of Andrey Zigmantovich
Andrey Zigmantovich is a former Soviet and Belarusian football player, known for his skills as a defender and midfielder. He was born in Minsk and began his football career at the SDYUSHOR-5 youth academy under the guidance of his first coach, Oleg Bazarnov.
Football Career
Zigmantovich played for the Minsk-based club "Dinamo" in the Soviet Union championship during the 1980s. He was part of the team that became champions in 1982. In the 1991/92 season, he joined the Dutch club "Groningen," but due to disagreements with the club's management, his contract was not renewed.
In 1992, Zigmantovich returned to "Dinamo" and continued playing for the club. However, in February 1993, he signed a contract with the Spanish team "Racing," where he played until mid-1996. Zigmantovich was known for his physical strength, endurance, positional play, toughness in battles, ability to compete for aerial balls, and strong determination.
During his career, Zigmantovich represented the Soviet and Belarusian national teams. He played one match for the Soviet Olympic team and 36 matches for the Soviet national team, scoring three goals. He also participated in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Zigmantovich played nine matches for the Belarusian national team, including the historic victory over the Netherlands on June 7, 1995.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Zigmantovich pursued a career in coaching. He worked as the head coach for Belarusian clubs "Naftan" and "Dinamo" (Minsk). From 2004, he served as the head coach of the Belarusian youth national team. He also had coaching stints with various clubs, including MTZ-RIPO, Kaunas (Lithuania), and Siberia. In 2011-2012, he was the head coach of the club "Siberia-2."
