Early Life and Club Career
Andy Polo is a Peruvian footballer who currently plays as a forward for Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Peru national team. He began his career with the youth academy of Universitario in his native Lima. At the age of 16, he made his senior debut for Universitario on April 23, 2011, against Alianza Atlético. He scored his first goal for the club on May 7th in a match against Cienciano, quickly establishing himself as a regular in the starting lineup.
In the 2011 Copa Libertadores U-20, Polo played a pivotal role for Universitario, emerging as the tournament's top scorer and helping the team lift the trophy after defeating Boca Juniors in the final. He made his Copa Libertadores debut on September 1st, 2011, against Deportivo Anzoátegui. On his 17th birthday, during a match against Godoy Cruz, he provided an assist and was named the Man of the Match. In the decisive second leg on October 21st, Polo scored a crucial late goal to help Universitario advance to the next round via a penalty shootout.
International Career
Polo represented Peru at the South American Youth Championships in 2011 and 2013. In the 2013 tournament, he contributed a goal in Peru's triumph. He made his senior international debut for Peru on March 30, 2016, in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. Polo was part of the Peruvian squad that participated in the 2016 Copa América Centenario, appearing in matches against Haiti, Ecuador, Brazil, and Colombia.
Loan Stints and MLS Career
In 2014, Polo signed with Italian club Inter Milan and was immediately loaned out to Colombian side Millonarios. He made his debut in the Copa Mustang on July 20th against Envigado and scored his first goal for the club on September 14th against Santa Fe. Inter later loaned Polo back to Universitario in 2015 and to Mexican club Monarcas Morelia in 2017.
In early 2018, Polo joined Portland Timbers on loan. He debuted in MLS on March 5th against Los Angeles Galaxy. In February 2019, Polo signed a permanent deal with Portland. He has since become a key contributor, scoring numerous goals and providing assists for the Timbers in various competitions.
