Early Life and Education

Richard Garriott, an American computer programmer and entrepreneur, was born on July 4, 1961. As a child, he developed a passion for technology and gaming.

Creating Ultima: The Birth of a Legend

While still in high school, Garriott programmed dozens of games on the Apple II inspired by Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). His first commercial release was Akalabeth: World of Doom (aka "Ultima 0") in 1979. In 1980, he partnered with California Pacific Computer Company and began working on the Ultima series.

Origin Systems: Independence and Innovation

After graduating from college, Garriott worked as a professional game designer. Disgruntled with his contract with Sierra On-Line, he founded Origin Systems in 1983 with his brother, father, and a friend. They self-published their games, including the first five Ultima installments.

Expanding Horizons with Origin Systems

Throughout its existence, Origin Systems released numerous successful titles, such as Wing Commander, System Shock, and Ultima Online. The latter was one of the first successful graphical MMORPGs.

Electronic Arts Acquisition and Continued Success

In 1992, Garriott sold Origin Systems to Electronic Arts. Under EA, the studio continued to thrive until 1997. During this time, Garriott's team created one of the most popular and enduring MMORPGs, Ultima Online.

Space Exploration: A Futuristic Adventure

In 2008, Garriott became the first second-generation space tourist to orbit the Earth. He spent 12 days on the International Space Station, conducting research and participating in scientific experiments.

Later Years and Accomplishments

After leaving Electronic Arts, Garriott continued to develop games and invest in new technologies. He is widely recognized for his pioneering contributions to the gaming industry and his passion for space exploration.
