Angel Berni: Paraguayan Footballing Legend
Early Life and CareerAngel Berni was born in the San José neighborhood of Asunción, Paraguay. He began his professional career with Olimpia Asunción, where he played with the first team from 1949 to 1951.
International Success
In 1950, Berni was part of the Paraguayan national team that competed in the World Cup, although he did not make any appearances. At the 1953 South American Championship, he played in all six matches and scored four goals, finishing as the tournament's third-highest goalscorer and helping Paraguay win its first South American title.
Club Career in Colombia and Argentina
After leaving Olimpia, Berni moved to Colombia to play for Boca Juniors de Cali, winning the Colombian Cup with the team. In 1953, he joined San Lorenzo de Almagro in Argentina, where he formed a formidable attacking duo with José Sanfilippo and, for one season, René Pontoni. In his second year at the club, Berni became the league's top scorer, netting 19 goals in 30 matches. He also helped San Lorenzo win the Argentine championship in his final season there, playing in a total of 71 matches and scoring 29 goals.
European Adventure and Career End
In 1959, Berni moved to Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, where he made 14 appearances and scored six goals. The following year, he joined Real Betis in Spain, where he played until his retirement in 1964.
