Andreas Brehme: German Football Legend

Andreas Brehme was a German football legend known for his exceptional skills as a flanking defender and midfielder. His crowning achievement was scoring the winning penalty in the 1990 FIFA World Cup Final against Argentina.

Early Career and Club Success

Born in Hamburg, Brehme began his professional career with local club Barmbek Uhlenhorst. He went on to play for Kaiserslautern from 1981 to 1986 and 1992 to 1998, where he helped guide the team to victory in the German Cup in 1996. Brehme also had stints with Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga title in 1987, Inter Milan, where he triumphed in Serie A in 1989 and the UEFA Cup in 1991, and Real Zaragoza in the Spanish La Liga.

International Glory with West Germany

Brehme enjoyed a remarkable international career with the West German national team. He played in two FIFA World Cups, scoring a memorable winning goal from a free kick against France in the semi-final of the 1986 tournament. In the 1990 World Cup, he netted the decisive penalty in the dramatic final victory over Argentina. Brehme's 86 appearances for the national team included 8 goals.

Coaching Career and Legacy

Following his retirement from playing, Brehme pursued a coaching career. He managed Kaiserslautern from 2000 to 2002 and also coached Unterhaching, Stuttgart, and served as an assistant to Giovanni Trapattoni. Brehme's coaching career was marked by a number of challenges and setbacks.

Passing of a Legend

Andreas Brehme passed away on the night of February 19-20, 2024, in Munich at the age of 63, due to cardiac arrest. He became the first member of West Germany's 1990 World Cup-winning squad to pass away, following the death of coach Franz Beckenbauer a month and a half earlier. Brehme's legacy as a world-class footballer and a passionate coach continues to inspire generations of players and fans.
