Angelica Galindes - A Beauty Queen with Alopecia
Angelica Galindes, a professional cosmetologist and half-Filipina, made headlines as a contestant in the Miss Philippines Earth USA 2014 beauty pageant. However, what sets her apart from the other contestants is her unique condition - she is completely bald due to a hair loss disease called alopecia.

A Life with Alopecia
Angelica was diagnosed with alopecia when she was just 12 years old. Over the next three years, she lost all of her hair. Growing up bald in her teenage years was a challenging experience for Angelica. She faced bullying and teasing from her peers, often resorting to wearing hats to hide her condition. Despite the initial difficulties, Angelica eventually accepted her hair loss and embraced her true self.

An Unexpected Opportunity
Angelica never imagined participating in a beauty pageant until a family friend took the initiative to submit her photo to the organizers of Miss Philippines Earth USA. Initially, Angelica's photo featured her wearing a wig. However, as the pageant approached, she decided to send her real photos without the wig. This was a bold move for Angelica, as she wanted to challenge societal norms and shed light on the issue of hair loss, particularly among children and young adults.

Breaking Barriers
Angelica's participation in the beauty pageant was met with warmth and acceptance. Contrary to her expectations, she did not face hostility or judgment from the other contestants. In fact, one of her competitors expressed hope that Angelica would win. Her inspiring performance on stage captivated the audience and judges alike. Despite the absence of flowing locks, Angelica radiated confidence and grace.
A New Title and a Platform for Change
Angelica's exceptional presence earned her the title of Miss Philippines Water USA 2014 and a ticket to the next stage of the competition, Miss Philippines Earth USA Nationals, scheduled to take place in Manila in April 2014. In interviews, Angelica expressed her belief that this opportunity would allow her to showcase the beauty of individuals like her and challenge societal beauty standards.
A Call for Change
Angelica's participation in the beauty pageant served as a reminder to society that it is time to redefine beauty standards and embrace a more realistic and inclusive view of beauty. As she embarks on her traditional social and environmental mission as a beauty queen, Angelica Galindes continues to inspire others and advocate for greater acceptance and understanding of those with alopecia and other conditions that challenge conventional notions of beauty.
