Early Life and Education

Angelo Heilprin was born on March 31, 1853, in Sátoraljaújhely, Northern Hungary. In 1856, he immigrated to the United States with his father, Michael, and brother, Louis.

Academic Pursuits

In 1876, Heilprin returned to Europe for two years to complete his education. He studied at the Royal School of Mines in London and the Imperial Geological Institution of Vienna. He also received formal art training in Florence.

Professorship and Expeditions

In 1880, Heilprin became Professor of Invertebrate Paleontology and Geology at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. He served as the museum's curator from 1883 to 1892.

As an explorer, Heilprin traveled extensively while balancing his academic work. He visited Florida, Bermuda, Mexico, Greenland, and Martinique, studying geological formations and ecosystems.

Exploration Highlights

1886:Organized an expedition to Florida's west coast.
1887:Studied coral reefs in Bermuda with his students.

1888:Climbed several volcanoes in Mexico, including Ixtaccihuatl and Popocatepetl.

1891 and 1892:Led expeditions in Greenland to prove its insularity.

1902:Witnessed the eruption of Mount Pelée on Martinique and provided valuable scientific documentation.

Legacy and Honors

Angelo Heilprin died on July 17, 1907. He was honored with the naming of the Lilac-crowned Parrot (Cyanocorax heilprini) and the Haitian Tree Frog (Hypsiboas heilprini).
