Ann Lee Doran, an American actress, was born in Amarillo, Texas, in 1911. Her mother, Rose Allen, was a former actress, which inspired Ann to pursue a career in acting from a young age. She received her first television role at the age of four. Throughout her career, Doran rarely performed under her real name due to her father's disapproval of her acting aspirations. He did not want her name to be noticed in credits.
Early Career
One of Doran's earliest films was the adventure movie 'Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood' in 1922, directed by Allan Dwan. However, her name was not mentioned in the credits. In the 1920s and early 1930s, she appeared in films such as 'Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,' 'Servants' Entrance,' 'Night Life of the Gods,' and many others, but she did not have leading roles in any of them. It was only in 1935 that Doran landed a supporting role in the film 'Case of the Missing Man,' directed by D. Ross Lederman.
Acting Career
Over the next 20 years, Doran appeared in over 100 films, but none of them brought her significant fame. In early 1955, director Nicholas Ray cast her as Mrs. Carol Stark in the melodrama 'Rebel Without a Cause.' Doran had a contract with Columbia Pictures, signed in 1938, and she also appeared in various television series and short films, such as 'The Spider's Web,' 'Flying G-Men,' 'The Three Stooges,' and 'Fool's Gold.' Despite her extensive filmography, she mainly played leading roles in comedic short films directed by Charley Chase.
Later Career
Doran also had a role in the television series 'Rusty,' which started in 1945. She appeared as a guest on shows like 'My Friend Flicka' and 'Meet Mr. McNutley' on CBS. In 1960, Doran played a role in the family drama 'National Velvet.' Several years later, she appeared in two seasons of the western series 'The Legend of Jesse James,' portraying Zerelda James Samuel. Her last on-screen appearance was in the 1986 film 'Wildcats,' directed by Michael Ritchie.
Legacy and Death
Ann Lee Doran passed away on September 19, 2000, at the age of 89. Throughout her career, she appeared in over 500 films and 1000 television shows and series. Despite not achieving significant fame, Doran made a lasting contribution to the film and television industry with her extensive body of work.
