Gina Torres is an American television and film actress, best known for her roles as Cas in the movies "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" and Zoe in the series "Firefly" and its film continuation "Serenity", as well as for her episodic roles as Nebula in the series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and Cleopatra in the series "Xena: Warrior Princess".

Early Life

Gina Torres was born on April 25, 1969, at Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital in Manhattan, New York. She is the youngest of three children. Her parents were Cuban immigrants, with her father working as a typesetter at La Prensa and later at the New York Daily News. Her mother was a dedicated and artistically gifted homemaker. The family lived in Washington Heights for a short time before moving to the Bronx. She grew up in the diverse neighborhood of Grand Concourse, predominantly populated by Latin Americans, whose culture she began to embrace.

Believing that her future lay in show business, Gina enrolled in the prestigious Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City, where she specialized in vocal training. In her free time, she sang in school productions and in the church choir.

Career

After graduating from high school, Gina began her ascent to the top of show business by working at the reception desk of a theater at Lincoln Center. Although this job was not the most suitable, it gave her the opportunity to continue her career for a few more months, during which Gina appeared in several plays and musicals, such as "Dreamgirls," "The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public," and "Marvin's Room." Despite her passion for theater, she knew that the real money was in film and television. Eventually, she made her screen debut in 1992 in the series "Law & Order," to which she returned in 1995 in a different role. Popular series followed one after another, and over the next five years, she appeared in shows such as "NYPD Blue," "One Life to Live," "Profiler," "Xena: Warrior Princess," and "La Femme Nikita."

Her feature film debut came in 1996 with the movie "Bed of Roses" starring Mary Stuart Masterson and Christian Slater. She then had a role in the series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," in which she appeared from 1997 to 1999. In 2000, Gina landed the lead role in the TV series "Cleopatra 2525." In 2002, she starred as Zoe in the series "Firefly," which brought her fame, and her character became beloved by many. But the real breakthrough came a year later with her role in the second film of the acclaimed trilogy, "The Matrix Reloaded," and later in the third film, "The Matrix Revolutions." She went on to have numerous roles in popular series such as "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation," "24," "The Shield," "Standoff," "Boston Legal," "Bones," "FlashForward," "Gossip Girl," "The Vampire Diaries," "Suits," and "Pearson."

Personal Life

Gina met Laurence Fishburne on the set of "The Matrix Reloaded." They announced their engagement in February 2001 and got married on September 22, 2002. In June 2007, they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Delilah.
