Early Life and Career
Anne Rutherford was born on November 2, 1920, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Her parents were John Rutherford, a singer for the Metropolitan Opera, and Canadian actress Lillian Mansfield. It was clear from a young age that Anne would become an actress. She made her show business debut in 1925 at the age of five, participating in a radio production. Over the next ten years, Anne frequently appeared in various radio shows.
Movie Stardom
After making her film debut in 1935 in the crime drama "Waterfront Lady", Anne Rutherford appeared in three more films that same year, and over thirty films in the following four years. She gained particular success for her role as Carreen O'Hara in the iconic Oscar-winning film "Gone with the Wind" in 1939.
Success and MGM Contract
In 1937, Anne Rutherford signed a long-term contract with MGM after her debut in the romantic comedy "You're Only Young Once". She played Polly Benedict, a friend of Andy Hardy played by Mickey Rooney. She went on to appear in twelve more films in the "Andy Hardy" series, with the last one, "The Courtship of Andy Hardy", released in 1942. Anne also had a successful role in the adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". However, her breakthrough role came as Scarlett O'Hara's sister, Carreen, in "Gone with the Wind". Following this, she was invited to star in many successful films of that time, including "Pride and Prejudice", "Orchestra Wives", and "Washington Melodrama". Anne was one of the few who achieved not only success with the audience but also a raise in salary during the difficult war years.
Later Career and Personal Life
In 1942, Anne Rutherford parted ways with MGM. Afterward, she appeared in over 20 films, including the drama "The Happy Land", the romantic comedy "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", the melodrama "Don Juan", and many others. In total, Anne Rutherford appeared in over 70 films. Her last role was in the comedy "Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood" in 1976.
Anne Rutherford was married twice. In 1942, she married David May, and they had a daughter, Gloria, in 1943. They divorced ten years later, and in the same year, Anne married William Dozier, the producer of the TV series "Batman". Today, she enjoys her retirement, occasionally responding to letters from her numerous fans, of which the 84-year-old movie star has plenty.
