Early Life and Legal Career
Anna Finocchiaro was born on March 31, 1955, in Modica, Sicily. She obtained a law degree and began working at the Bank of Italy in Savona in 1981. From 1982 to 1985, she served as a magistrate in Leonforte, Sicily, and from 1985 to 1987, she was a prosecutor in Catania.
Political Beginnings
In 1988, Finocchiaro entered politics by becoming a member of the Catania municipal council, initially representing the Communist Party and later the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS). From 1987 to 2006, she held various seats in the Chamber of Deputies, representing different political groups.
Minister for Equal Opportunities
In 1996, Finocchiaro was appointed Minister for Equal Opportunities in the first Prodi government, a position she held until 1998.
Senate Career
In 2006, Finocchiaro was elected to the Senate, where she served as leader of the Olive Tree group and, later, the Democratic Party group from 2008 to 2013. She currently presides over the Senate's Constitutional Affairs Commission.
Minister for Parliamentary Relations
In 2016, following the resignation of the Renzi government, Finocchiaro became Minister for Parliamentary Relations in the Gentiloni government.
Personal Life
Anna Finocchiaro is married to Melchiorre Fidelbo, a gynecologist, and they have two daughters, Miranda and Costanza.
Controversies
Finocchiaro's husband has been investigated by the Catania prosecutor's office for alleged abuse of power and fraud related to a contract awarded to his company in 2010. However, the charges were dismissed in 2012.
Financial Declaration
In 2013, Finocchiaro declared assets including seven houses, three apartments, and an Alfa Romeo MiTo.
