Anna Gabriel: A Catalan Activist and Politician
Early Life and BackgroundAnna Gabriel was born into a working-class family in Salo, a town in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Her father, originally from Andalusia, worked as a miner in Catalonia, while her mother, from Murcia, was a member of the Socialist Party of Catalonia. Gabriel's grandfather and great-grandfather were both members of the National Confederation of Labor, a major trade union in Spain.
Education and Early Political Involvement
Gabriel holds a degree in social education and a law degree from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She also earned an MBA in labor law from the same university, where she later taught history of law and the state. Her passion for politics started at a young age, and she became involved in local anti-fascist organizations at the age of 16.
Local and Regional Politics
Gabriel entered the political arena in 2002, joining the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP), a left-wing, anti-capitalist party seeking independence for Catalonia. In 2003, she was elected as a councilor for the municipality of Salo, where she served until 2011. She also ran in the 2007 municipal elections and served as an opposition councilor. In 2012, she ran for the Catalan Parliament but was unsuccessful.
Involvement in the Catalan Independence Movement
Gabriel became more prominently involved in the Catalan independence movement in 2015, when she was elected to the Catalan Parliament as a member of the CUP. She played a key role in the 2016 debates on the appointment of Carles Puigdemont as President of the Catalan Government. In 2017, she was present during the vote on the declaration of the Catalan Republic, which was later suspended by the Spanish Constitutional Court.
Legal Troubles and Exile
Following the Catalan independence referendum in October 2017, the Spanish Supreme Court indicted Gabriel and other Catalan leaders for rebellion and other charges related to the attempt to declare independence. Gabriel was summoned for questioning in February 2018 but fled to Geneva, Switzerland, fearing arrest and prosecution. She remains in exile, and a warrant for her arrest is still active in Spain.
