Anna-Greta Leijon: Swedish Social Democrat and Political Pioneer
Early Life and CareerAnna-Greta Leijon was born in Stockholm, Sweden. She began her career in public service in 1964 at the Swedish Labour Market Administration, quickly rising to the position of Director in 1970.
Political Ascent
In 1973, Leijon entered politics as a Minister without Portfolio. In this role, she signed the order to extradite members of the West German terrorist group Red Army Faction (RAF) from Sweden. This decision made her a target of the RAF, who planned to kidnap her in 1977 as part of Operation "Leo." However, the plot was thwarted, and Leijon became a symbol of Sweden's commitment to combating terrorism.
Government Service
Leijon was elected to the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) in 1974, where she served as Vice-Chair of the Labour Market Committee from 1979 to 1982. She held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Employment (1982-1987), Minister for Gender Equality (1986), and Minister of Justice (1987-1988), where she resigned amidst controversy. In 1988, she became Chair of the Finance Committee.
International Leadership
Beyond her domestic roles, Leijon played a prominent role in international organizations. In 1984, she became President of the International Labour Organization. She also served as Chair of the Swedish Council for Research in the Social Sciences and hosted several television programs on social issues.
Later Career
From 1999 to 2008, Leijon served as Director of the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm. She was a passionate advocate for the arts and culture.
Personal Life
Leijon was married twice, first to Anders Leijon from 1964 to 1970 and then to electronic engineer Leif Bäckey from 1975 until her death. She was the mother of Britta Leijon, a former Swedish Minister for Democratic Affairs.
Legacy
Anna-Greta Leijon passed away at the age of 84 in 2024 after a brief illness. She left behind a legacy as a groundbreaking politician, a staunch defender of democracy, and a tireless advocate for social justice. Her contributions to Swedish society and the international community continue to inspire generations of leaders.
