Early Life and Education
Robert Habeck was born on September 2, 1969, in Lübeck, Germany. He grew up in Heikendorf, where his parents ran a pharmacy. Habeck attended Heinrich Heine School in Heikendorf and later completed alternative civilian service before pursuing studies in German, Philology, and Philosophy at the Universities of Freiburg, Roskilde, and Hamburg. He earned a Master's degree in 1996 and a PhD in Philosophy in 2000 from the University of Hamburg.
Career in Publishing
Habeck worked with his wife, Andrea Paluch, in the publishing industry. They translated books, wrote their own, and worked in the field of literature.
Political Career
Entry into PoliticsHabeck joined the Green Party in 2002 and became leader of the party's Schleswig-Holstein branch in 2004. He led the Green Party faction in the Landtag (state parliament) from 2009 to 2012.
Minister in Schleswig-Holstein
After the 2012 state elections, Habeck was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Agriculture, and the Environment. He retained this position in the "Jamaica Coalition" government led by Premier Daniel Günther (CDU) after the 2017 elections. Habeck stepped down as minister in 2018 to focus on his party leadership.
Green Party Co-Chair
On January 27, 2018, Habeck was elected Co-Chair of the Green Party alongside Annalena Baerbock at a party congress in Hanover. They were re-elected in November 2019.
Stance on Ukraine and Russia
Habeck advocates for defensive weapons supplies to Ukraine, condemning Russia's actions in the Donbas conflict. He has criticized the Merkel government's support for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline and its refusal to offer Ukraine a membership perspective in the EU.
Coalition Preferences
Habeck prefers a political alliance with the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which he believes shares similar views with the Greens. He has ruled out a coalition with the Left Party.
Work in Government
Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economics and ClimateFollowing the 2021 federal elections, Habeck was appointed Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economics and Climate in Olaf Scholz's government.
Nord Stream 2 and Russian Sanctions
Habeck warned Russia of "serious consequences" for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline if it attacked Ukraine. He has also accused the Russian government of breaching contractual obligations by demanding payment for gas in rubles.
Gas Crisis and Ruble Payments
Amidst the Ukraine war, Habeck triggered an early warning phase for an emergency situation in Germany in case of a gas supply cut-off from Russia. He has also stated that the G7 has agreed to reject Russian demands for ruble payments for gas.
