Anna Gristina, a British woman, was recognized as being involved in the facilitation of prostitution. Despite being a model mother to her four children and a loving wife, Gristina was accused of running a brothel in Manhattan and leading a network of high-end escorts who had faithfully served wealthy clients for 15 years. A Guilty Plea and Time Served
After reaching an agreement with the prosecution, 44-year-old British national Anna Gristina admitted her guilt in one instance of promoting prostitution. Leaving the New York Supreme Court in Manhattan with a triumphant demeanor, Gristina was sentenced to six months of imprisonment by Judge Juan Merchan. However, she had already spent four months behind bars at Rikers Island Prison before her release on bail. Gristina showcased her best behavior during her time in jail, making it unlikely that she would return there. The scheduled jury trial never took place, and no guilty verdict was reached. This meant that Gristina, who could have faced seven years in prison and deportation from the United States upon release, now had a real chance to remain in the country where she had lived for almost 30 years with a green card.
An Unexpected Turn of Events
Representing the prosecution, Charles Linehan presented the only evidence of Gristina's guilt, which had been under surveillance for five years. An undercover police officer, posing as a client named 'Anthony', managed to record an agreement made with two prostitutes for the price of $2,000. He also captured the scene of their encounter in the house of tolerance. Initially, the prosecution was satisfied with the obtained evidence. However, Gristina's lawyer, Norm Pattis, argued that the video footage only showed the prostitutes engaging in sexual activity with each other while 'Anthony' observed. According to Pattis, 'Anthony' had essentially requested a legal striptease, not become a client of an illegal brothel.
Evidence and Allegations
The investigation also uncovered intercepted phone conversations in which Gristina shamelessly bragged about her connections and influence in the New York Police Department, the FBI, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, Customs, and more. When Gristina was arrested, the prosecutor initially demanded a $2 million bail, which was later reduced to $250,000. However, no evidence was found linking law enforcement to Gristina's brothel.
Possible Witnesses and Partners
If the jury trial had taken place, three escorts from Gristina's escort service and her business partner Jaynie Mae Baker would have been called as witnesses. The case also involved Jonas Gayer, a Russian-born accountant who laundered Gristina's money and was willing to confess his involvement.
A Strategic Decision
Explaining why his client agreed to a plea deal, attorney Norm Pattis stated that one should not turn down a good offer. When Gristina left the courthouse, she was warmly welcomed by her husband Kelvin and three of her four children. She announced that the prosecution had achieved what they wanted, but she still considered herself a winner.
