Early Life and Education
Artur Arutyunyan, a renowned oenologist, was born on October 28, 1959, in the village of Yeghis (now Artabunyk), Armenia. In 1981, he graduated from the Armenian Agricultural Institute with a degree in Winemaking Engineering.
He continued his education at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking "Magarach" (Yalta), where he completed his postgraduate studies from 1981 to 1984. In 1985, he successfully defended his thesis for his Candidate of Technical Sciences degree.
Scientific Research
Carbon Dioxide in WinesArutyunyan's scientific research has focused on various aspects of winemaking, including the study of carbon dioxide in wines and the development of methods for its identification. He investigated techniques for carbonating wines using liquid carbon dioxide and explored the chemistry and kinetics of degassing in the resulting beverages.
Terroir and Armenian Wines
He has also conducted extensive research on the relationship between environmental factors, such as soil composition, climate, and human influences, and the quality of Armenian wines with geographical designations. His work has aimed to understand the historical, legal, geographical, and technological aspects that shape the unique characteristics of Armenian wines.
Technological Innovations
Arutyunyan has developed and patented innovative technologies for winemaking. His inventions include effective carbonation techniques and specialized equipment for their implementation. His contributions have advanced the field of winemaking and improved the quality and efficiency of wine production.
Classification and Preservation of Armenian Grape Varieties
He has systematically classified the genetic heritage of Armenian grape varieties, including over 1300 newly bred cultivars. This comprehensive work covers not only the territory of Armenia but also Armenian-inhabited areas in neighboring countries. Arutyunyan has documented the technological and ampelographic characteristics of these grape varieties and identified their cultivation areas and sites of discovery.
Publications and Intellectual Property
Arutyunyan has authored three monographs, six patents, and 72 scientific articles. His publications have disseminated his research findings and contributed to the body of knowledge in the field of oenology.
Public Service and Advocacy
Association LeadershipArutyunyan served as the Chairman of the Union of Armenian Winemakers from 1998 to 2016. Since 2017, he has held the position of Chairman of the Public Organization "National Wine Center," an NGO dedicated to addressing contemporary issues in Armenian viticulture and winemaking.
Policymaking and Legislative Initiatives
He has played a pivotal role in drafting legislation and government resolutions related to the wine industry in Armenia. His work has established mechanisms for implementing and regulating industry practices. Arutyunyan has also analyzed trends and identified challenges facing the wine sector in Armenia.
Academic and Educational Contributions
TeachingArutyunyan has shared his expertise by teaching "Winemaking Technology" at the National Agrarian University of Armenia from 1993 to 2015. Since 2015, he has taught "Wine Culture" at the Yerevan State University of Languages and Social Sciences after V. Brusov.
Documentary Film
He wrote the script for the documentary film "The Tale of Armenian Wine," which explores the rich history and traditions of winemaking in Armenia.
