Early Life and Education

Anna Soubry was born into a working-class family in London. Her father owned a garage, and her mother was a radiographer. She attended a state comprehensive school and then went on to study law at the University of Birmingham.

Career in Journalism and Law

After graduating, Soubry worked in television from 1981 to 1995, starting on a regional Scottish channel before moving to Grampian Television and Central TV. In the late 1980s, she reached the peak of her journalism career, becoming a features editor on the breakfast television show "This Morning."

After leaving journalism, Soubry opened a legal practice in Nottingham, specializing in criminal law.

Political Career

Soubry has always been politically active. In her younger years, she was a member of the left-wing National Union of Students (NUS) and a campaigner for the Social Democratic Party.

She joined the Conservative Party and ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in 2005. In 2010, she was elected as the MP for Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire.

Soubry quickly rose through the ranks of the government, serving as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health and Defence before becoming Minister of State for Small Business, Industry and Enterprise in 2015.

Brexit and the Independent Group

Soubry was a vocal opponent of Brexit and left the Conservative Party in 2019 in protest of the government's withdrawal from the European Union. She joined the Independent Group, a cross-party alliance of MPs who shared similar views.

Change UK

In 2019, Soubry became the leader of Change UK, a centrist party that emerged from the Independent Group. However, the party later split, with Soubry remaining an independent MP.

Personal Life

Soubry is divorced and has two children. She has spoken out about her experience of witnessing racist abuse as a teenager and has vowed to never stand idly by in the face of injustice.
