Early Life and EducationHakeem Jeffries was born on August 4, 1970, in New York City. He attended Brooklyn College and New York University School of Law.
Legal Career
After graduating law school, Jeffries worked as a corporate lawyer at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. He later joined Viacom and CBS as general counsel.
Political Ascent
In 2006, Jeffries was elected to the New York State Assembly, representing the 57th Assembly District. He served in the Assembly from 2007 to 2012, focusing on criminal justice reform and economic development.
In 2012, Jeffries was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New York's 8th Congressional District. He has since been re-elected three times.
Democratic Leadership
House Minority LeaderIn 2019, Jeffries became the Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. On November 30, 2022, he was elected to succeed Nancy Pelosi as the Democratic Leader in the House of Representatives for the 118th Congress.
Personal Life
Jeffries is married to Kennisandra Arciniegas-Jeffries, a social worker at the 1199 SEIU Benefit Fund. They have two sons and reside in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Jeffries is a practicing Baptist.
Family
Jeffries' younger brother, Hasan Kwame Jeffries, is an associate professor of history at The Ohio State University. He is also the author of the book "Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in the Alabama Black Belt." Jeffries is the nephew of Leonard Jeffries, a former professor at City College of New York.
