Anna Judic: French Operetta Singer and Chansonette
Anna-Marie-Louise Damien, known as Anna Judic, was born on July 17, 1850, in Semur-en-Auxois. She graduated from the Paris Conservatory and gained fame through her performances in Léon Vasseur's "Le Coupe d'Argent" (The Silver Cup). On the stage of the Parisian theater Buff-Parisiens, she became a star in the premieres of Jacques Offenbach's operettas, such as "La Belle Hélène" and "La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein". She also performed on the cabaret stage and played a significant role in the development of a distinct style of French chanson known as chanson de geste.
From 1875, Anna Judic frequently performed in Russia, including in St. Petersburg. She was the first performer of Denise, the main role in Florimond Hervé's operetta "Mademoiselle Nitouche", which premiered on December 26, 1883, at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris.
Anna Judic passed away on April 15, 1911, in Vallauris. She is known for her photographic portrait by Nadar and a lithograph of her image created by Toulouse-Lautrec.
