Early Life and Education
Minneulla Ibrahimovich Atayev was born in 1912 in Bedevkent, Turkmenistan, into a peasant family. After completing his education at the Chardzhou Pedagogical College, he worked as a school principal and an instructor for the Tashkent Oblast Council of the Voluntary Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy (Osoaviakhim).
Military Service
Atayev served in the Red Army from 1934 to 1937 and again from 1941. He entered the battles of World War II in 1942.
Squadron Commander
Atayev was the squadron commander of the 294th Cavalry Regiment of the 112th Volunteer Bashkir Cavalry Division, 8th Cavalry Corps, 5th Tank Army, Southwestern Front.
Heroism at Belaya Kalitva
On January 21, 1943, Atayev's squadron captured Height 79.9 in enemy-held territory near Belaya Kalitva, Rostov Oblast. They defended it fiercely for two days, repelling seven enemy counterattacks. The squadron destroyed approximately 300 enemy soldiers, three tanks, and an armored vehicle.
Death and Legacy
Atayev was killed in action on January 22, 1943. He was buried in the Square of the Fallen Fighters in Belaya Kalitva. For his exceptional valor and leadership, Atayev was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
