Early Life and Education
Penny Mordaunt was born in Torquay, Devon, England. She studied at Oaklands School, Basingstoke, and then attended the University of Reading, where she earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy. In 2016, Mordaunt revealed that she was the victim of an attempted rape when she was a first-year student in 1987, but the police advised her to withdraw her complaint due to the lack of evidence.
Career in Accounting and Politics
After graduating university, Mordaunt worked as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 2015, she was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth North, a seat she held until 2017. In that year, Mordaunt was re-elected as the MP for Portsmouth South and has served in that capacity ever since.
Political Career
From 2016 to 2017, Mordaunt served as an assistant government whip under Theresa May. In 2017, she was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. In 2018, she became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence.
In 2019, Mordaunt was appointed Secretary of State for International Development, a position she held until 2020. In 2021, she was appointed Minister of State for Business, Energy, and Clean Growth.
Personal Life
Mordaunt was married to John Mordaunt, but the couple later divorced. They have two children together. Mordaunt resides in Netherwitton Hall, a family estate near Morpeth, Northumberland.
