Patriarch of Constantinople

Early Life and Education
Anthimos IV was born in Constantinople.

He received an excellent education and later taught at the Diplokionion Parish's Greek school.

Ecclesiastical Career

Appointed Patriarchal Proto-Synkellos.
Elected Metropolitan of Iconium in October 1825.
Became Metropolitan of Larissa in September 1835.
Appointed Metropolitan of Nicomedia in August 1837.
First Patriarchate (1840-1841)
Elected as Patriarch of Constantinople on February 21, 1840.

Succeeded Patriarch Gregory VI, who was removed under pressure from the English ambassador.

Power became concentrated in the hands of his brother, the Grand Logothete.

Faced opposition from clergy led by Metropolitan Anthimos V.

Forced to resign on May 6, 1841.
Second Patriarchate (1848-1852)
Re-elected as Patriarch on June 29, 1850.
Issued a tomos proclaiming the autocephaly of the Church of Greece.
Retirement and Death
Resigned from the Patriarchate on October 30, 1852.
Retired to the island of Prinkipo.
Passed away peacefully at an advanced age.
