Childhood and Early Life
Anthony (Tony) Blinken was born on April 16, 1962, in Yonkers, New York. His father was a U.S. ambassador to Hungary, while his mother was a musicologist and later UNESCO's special envoy for culture. After his parents' divorce, he moved to Paris with his mother, who remarried Samuel Pisar, a Polish-born lawyer. Pisar's stories of escaping Nazi persecution during World War II had a profound impact on Blinken.
Education and Early Career
Blinken graduated from the École Jeannine Manuel in Paris. He initially considered a career in film but later changed his focus to social studies. He attended Harvard University, where he contributed to The Harvard Crimson as an editor. After graduating, he interned at The New Republic and earned a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law in 1985.
Political Career
Blinken began his political career under President Bill Clinton as a special assistant and speechwriter. He played a key role in strategic planning, especially in relations with Canada and Europe during Clinton's second term.
Under President George W. Bush, Blinken joined the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as staff director. He supported Senator Joe Biden's proposal for American troops in Iraq and helped draft a plan to divide the country into three semi-autonomous regions, although the idea was ultimately rejected.
During President Barack Obama's administration, Blinken became Biden's national security advisor when he was vice president. Blinken met his wife, Evan Ryan, in 1995 while she was an aide to First Lady Hillary Clinton. They married seven years later, and Blinken acknowledged in his wedding toast the role that voting for Clinton played in bringing them together. The couple has two children, whom they generally shield from public view.
