Anthony Joshua is a British professional boxer, born on October 15, 1989, in Watford, England. He is of Nigerian and Irish descent, with his mother, Etta Odusani, being a social worker from Nigeria, and his father having Nigerian and Irish roots. Joshua grew up in Nigeria and returned to England to attend school. After finishing school, he worked at a brick factory in his hometown of Watford before moving to London at the age of 17.
Joshua's boxing career began when his cousin introduced him to Finchley ABC, a boxing club in London. Despite being a naturally gifted athlete, Joshua had also excelled in football and had excellent endurance and speed, regularly running the 100-meter dash in less than 11 seconds. He trained with the captain of Watford FC, Troy Deeney, and even took tennis lessons at Wimbledon. His boxing training caught the attention of Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho and actor Dwayne Johnson, who both attended his fights.
In 2012, Joshua participated in the Olympic Games in London and won the gold medal in the heavyweight category. This made him the second heavyweight boxer in history, after Joe Frazier, to win a professional championship title while being the reigning Olympic champion in the super heavyweight division. Joshua's success in the Olympics brought him recognition and awards, including being named the Amateur Boxer of the Year by the British Writers' Club.
Following his Olympic victory, Joshua turned professional in 2013 and signed a contract with Matchroom Sport. He won his first professional fight by knockout in the first round. Over the next few years, Joshua had a series of victories, winning multiple titles, including the IBF, WBA, and IBO heavyweight championships. He has a son named Joseph Bailey from a previous relationship.
