Early Life

Anthony Joseph Kiedis was born on November 1, 1962, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His father, Blackie Dammett, later became the founder of the Red Hot Chili Peppers fan club, and his mother is Peggy Idema. Kiedis' parents divorced when he was six years old. Initially, he stayed with his mother, but at the age of 11, he moved to Los Angeles with his father. His father had a significant influence on him, and Kiedis wrote in his autobiography, "I inherited from my father an insatiable desire to meet all the beautiful women in the world." At the age of 13, Kiedis had his first sexual experience with an 18-year-old girl named Kimberley Smith, thanks to his father's involvement.

Early Years and Formation of RHCP

By his teenage years, Kiedis already had a rich life experience. In 1978, at the age of sixteen, he appeared in the film "F.I.S.T." with Sylvester Stallone under the pseudonym Cole Dammett. During a school fight, Kiedis helped an Australian boy named Michael Balzary, who later became known as "Flea." They became friends and were soon referred to as the "crazy duo." Kiedis and Flea were considered the wildest guys in all of Los Angeles. Their behavior became legendary at Fairfax High School, where they studied. Jumping into pools from the rooftops of tall Hollywood buildings was their favorite pastime. It was during this time that Kiedis developed an interest in music. He became a fan of Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Sly Stone, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Iggy Pop, Led Zeppelin, and Defunkt. Kiedis started writing poems and considered creating a band. Together with four of his friends, Kiedis formed the band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Although they did not come up with the name straight away, it eventually stuck and became their identity.

Battle with Addiction and Overcoming

In 1984-1985, Kiedis, along with his close friend and RHCP guitarist Hillel Slovak, started experimenting with drugs. According to his autobiography, Kiedis was first introduced to drugs by his own father when he was twelve years old. Two years later, in 1986, his drug problems became increasingly serious. He made the decision to seek treatment for his addiction, but it took time. In 1988, Slovak died of an overdose, leaving Kiedis devastated. He fled to the countryside in Southern California, seeking solace in the tranquility and trying to overcome his struggles. The rural silence, the shock of his friend's death, and his determination eventually led Kiedis to recovery, although his addiction would continue to resurface.

Later Life and Travels

During the late 90s, Kiedis embarked on numerous travels in search of inspiration and new experiences. He visited exotic countries, explored the jungles of Borneo, India, and Myanmar. These journeys greatly influenced him during the creation of the acclaimed album "Californication." In 1997, Kiedis had the opportunity to meet the Dalai Lama in India, an encounter he considers a happy event in his life. Currently, Kiedis resides in Laurel Canyon, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. He is dedicated to his health, following a vegetarian diet, practicing yoga, and taking care of his well-being.
