Biography of Anthony Nomar Garciaparra
Anthony Nomar Garciaparra, born on June 23, 1973, is an American baseball player. He has played for the Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, and Boston Red Sox. Garciaparra is one of thirteen players in Major League history to hit two grand slams in one game, and he is the only one to achieve this feat at home.
Early Life and Education
Garciaparra was born in Whittier, California. His name, "Nomar," is his father Ramon's name spelled backward. His last name is a combination of his father's and mother's surnames.
Garciaparra attended a local school where he excelled in football, rugby, and baseball. He also maintained a 4.0 grade point average and was one of the top students in his class. His athletic talents helped his team win the high school league championship in 1990-1991.
Garciaparra was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fifth round in 1991 but chose not to sign a contract. Instead, he enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he studied management. In 1994, he led the college team to the College World Series, although they were eliminated by Oklahoma.
Professional Career
In 1994, Garciaparra was drafted in the first round by the Boston Red Sox, who were impressed by his athletic achievements. He played in the minor leagues for three years before making his Major League debut on August 31, 1996, as a defensive replacement against the Oakland Athletics. His first hit in the Major Leagues was a home run.
Garciaparra quickly established himself as a replacement for John Valentin, who had been moved to second and third base. By 1997, he had already hit thirty home runs and scored ninety-eight runs, setting a new league record. From 1998 to 2000, Garciaparra was considered one of the best shortstops in the league.
In February 2001, Garciaparra appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated but suffered a serious wrist injury shortly after. This injury forced him to miss the entire season. In 2002, he recovered and continued to showcase his excellent skills, although his defense and average dropped.
By 2003, the Red Sox had a new owner who started to consider trading Garciaparra. Despite his wrist injury, Garciaparra was still one of the best players in the world at that time. In 2004, he played his last season with the Red Sox and helped them win their first World Series in eighty-six years.
In July 2004, Garciaparra was traded to the Chicago Cubs. Although his time with the team was average, his early achievements with the Red Sox were widely credited for the team's success. In 2005, he suffered a significant groin injury that kept him out of play for three months.
In 2006, Garciaparra returned to his hometown and signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He reunited with his former Red Sox teammates Bill Mueller and Derek Lowe, and his former manager, Grady Little. Garciaparra gradually regained his form and became the team's first baseman. He excelled defensively, making only one error in 588.2 innings.
Garciaparra was selected for the All-Star team in 2006, receiving over six million votes. In March 2009, he signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics. He wore his customary number five throughout his career, except for a brief period with the Cubs when he wore number eight.

On November 22, 2003, Garciaparra married Olympic soccer champion Mia Hamm. The couple welcomed twin daughters, Grace Isabella and Ava Carolina, on March 27, 2007. Both Garciaparra and Hamm share a passion for sports, and they have both represented their respective sports at the Olympics. Garciaparra once and Hamm three times.
