Early Life and Education

Steel, the son of an Indian officer, received his education at Cambridge University. During World War II, he served in the British Army. After the war, Steel pursued an acting career and landed a leading role in the adventure film "The Malta Story" in 1953, alongside Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins. His portrayal of military characters was well-received, possibly due to his firsthand knowledge of war.

Rise to Stardom in the British Film Industry

Steel's career flourished, and he soon became recognized as one of the biggest stars in the British film industry. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he and Dirk Bogarde topped the list of highest-paid actors in the United Kingdom. In 1956, Steel married Anita Ekberg and set out to conquer Hollywood. However, his Hollywood career did not fare well, and after parting ways with Hollywood, Steel only appeared in a few forgettable European films in the 1970s and 1980s. Notable among them was the erotic drama "The Story of O" in 1975, directed by Just Jaeckin, which explored pathological female submissiveness. He also made a few guest appearances on British television.

Film and Personal Life

During the filming of the adventure film "Where No Vultures Fly" in 1951, Steel crashed into a tree, injuring his knee. He later required surgery. Through another adventure film, "West of Zanzibar" in 1954, where he played the role of Bob Payton, Steel gained recognition with his own hit song, "Jumbo." Some of Steel's last films included the Italian crime film "Great Crime," the English thriller "The Mirror Crack'd," the comedy horror "The Monster Club" with Vincent Price, and the television thriller "The Glory Boys," based on Gerald Seymour's screenplay.

Before his marriage to Ekberg, Steel was married to Juanita Forbes from 1949 to 1954. After divorcing Ekberg, he married Joanna Melcher in 1964. Anthony Steel passed away from heart failure in Middlesex, England, at the age of 80.
