Early Life and Education
Lashawna Rasheda Lynch was born on November 27, 1987, in Hammersmith, London, of Jamaican descent. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Acting from ArtsEd Drama School in London.
Acting Debut and Breakthrough Roles
Lynch made her film debut in 2011's "Fast Girls," a sports drama. She gained prominence in the BBC miniseries "7.39." Her television credits include "Silent Witness," "Death in Paradise," and the short-lived BBC comedy series "Crims." In 2016, she starred as Rosaline Capulet in the period drama "Still Star-Crossed," a sequel to the Romeo and Juliet story.
Transition to Hollywood and 'Captain Marvel'
In 2018, Lynch was cast as Agent 355 in the television series "Y: The Last Man," which is still in development as of July 2019. She went on to star in the commercially successful superhero film "Captain Marvel," replacing DeWanda Wise as pilot Maria Rambeau.
Bond Girl to Bond Woman
Following Daniel Craig's announcement that he would step down as James Bond, a debate ensued over whether the next 007 should be a woman or a person of color. Feminist screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge was brought in to reconcile both options. In the upcoming 25th Bond film, currently in production in Italy and the UK, Lynch plays Nomi, a spy who temporarily replaces the iconic MI-6 agent.
Nomi and James Bond's First Encounter
Lynch's Nomi takes over the secret agent number 007 after Bond leaves the service and retreats to Jamaica. However, M (Ralph Fiennes) desperately recalls Bond to confront a new global crisis. Agents Nomi and James, both operating under the 007 designation, inevitably meet. An unnamed source close to the production of "Bond 25" says, "There is definitely a sexual attraction between the new 007 and Bond, and he tries his usual seductive tricks."
"James is thrown because they don't work—she's a beautiful, young, black woman who is more than capable of looking after herself. She's not interested in jumping into bed with him, not least because it's the 21st century."
Modernizing Bond
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her work on "Fleabag" and "Killing Eve," was hired to give the Bond franchise a contemporary edge.
"There's been a lot of talk about whether or not Bond is relevant now because of who he is and the way he treats women," said Waller-Bridge.
"I think that's rubbish. I think Bond is absolutely relevant now. It has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn't have to. He needs to be true to this character."
