Antoinette Palmisano: A Champion's Journey in Race Walking
Early Life and FamilyAntoinette Palmisano, an Italian race walker and Olympic champion, was born on August 6, 1991, in Mottola, Italy. She is the eldest daughter of parents who were involved in sports. Her father, a textile worker, participated in motocross racing, while her mother, a seamstress, enjoyed amateur volleyball. Her younger brother, Michele, also pursues athletics and won the Italian junior championship in 4 km race walking in 2009. Palmisano resides in Mottola with her maternal grandparents.
Education and Career Beginnings
Palmisano graduated from the Institute for Professional Social Services Mottola in 2010, majoring in advertising graphics. On March 12, 2010, she joined the Fiamme Gialle Sports Group as an Allieva Finanziere.
Junior Successes
Palmisano's early triumphs came in 2009 at the European Junior Championships (10 km), where she claimed a silver medal. She also secured a bronze at the European Cup in Race Walking (10 km) that year. In 2010, she topped the podium at the Junior World Race Walking Cup.
Rise on the International Stage
Palmisano's impressive junior performances paved the way for a strong senior career. At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, she finished 13th. Two years later, at the World Championships in Beijing, she achieved a top-5 result. In 2019, she won a bronze medal at the World Championships.
Team Europe Triumph and Olympic Glory
Palmisano's consistency culminated in a series of victories at major competitions. In 2021, she won the 20 km race at the European Team Championships in Race Walking, also claiming a bronze in the team competition. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Palmisano's dream came true as she became the Olympic champion in the 20 km race, clocking an impressive time of 1:29:12.
