Early Life and Education

Despite initially pursuing art as a self-taught artist, Clavé enrolled at the Barcelona School of Art in 1930, where he honed his skills for two years.

Exile and Early Career

Following the fall of the Spanish Republic, Clavé sought refuge in France in 1939. His first exhibition was held in Perpignan that same year.

Artistic Influence and Collaborations

In 1944, Clavé encountered the legend Pablo Picasso, fostering a close friendship that would inspire a series of works dedicated to Picasso in the 1980s. He also collaborated with renowned writers, illustrators, and theater artists like Roland Petit.

Abstract Expressionism and Critical Acclaim

Clavé's artistic style developed towards abstract expressionism, characterized by its vibrant and intense color palette. His first retrospective exhibition was held at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in 1978.

International Recognition

In 1984, Clavé represented Spain at the Venice Biennale, showcasing his extraordinary talent on the international stage.

Legacy and Honors

Clavé passed away in Paris and was laid to rest in the prestigious Montparnasse Cemetery. His legacy lives on as one of the most significant Catalan artists of the 20th century, earning him the Gold Medal of the Catalan Government in 1984.
