Čestmír Kramoliš (1853-1937)
Early Life and EducationČestmír Kramoliš was born on July 25, 1853, in Pilsen, Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic). He studied law at the University of Prague.
Literary Career
Kramoliš was a prolific poet. His poems were published in various collections, including "Ptaáí svát" (1888), "Živým i mrtvým" (1889), "Spadalé listí" (1890), "Písně z prince" (1891), and "Poli a lesy" (1891).
Academic and Literary Honors
In 1897, Kramoliš was elected a corresponding member of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Literature, and Arts. In 1923, he became a full member and later served as secretary of the Academy's art and literature department.
Translations
Kramoliš excelled as a translator, particularly of English literature. His most significant work was his translation of Shakespeare's sonnets, published in 1923.
Later Life and Legacy
Kramoliš died on March 16, 1937, in Prague. He is remembered as a distinguished poet and a key figure in Czech literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
