Antonio de Leyva: A Spanish General in the Italian Wars
Antonio de Leyva was a renowned Spanish general who played a significant role in the Italian Wars.
Early Military Career
Born into a noble family from Navarre, Leyva began his military career in southern Spain, where he fought against the Mudéjar rebels in the former Emirate of Granada (1502). Subsequently, he served in Italy (1503-1504) under the command of the famed Gran Capitán.
Participation in the Italian Wars
Leyva actively participated in the Italian Wars. In 1512, he sustained a wound at the Battle of Ravenna. He later fought near Milan under Fernando d'Avalos and participated in the failed Provence campaign of 1524.
Governor of Milan
Upon the death of Fernando d'Avalos in 1525, Leyva assumed command of the Holy Roman Empire's army in the Duchy of Milan. When the last Milanese duke, Francesco II Maria Sforza, died in 1535, Emperor Charles V appointed Leyva as Governor of Milan.
Legacy
Antonio de Leyva passed away from gout during another Provence campaign in 1536. He was buried in Milan, and his descendants continue to reside there to this day. Leyva's legacy as a skilled military commander and administrator remains significant in the history of the Italian Wars.
