Early Life and Military Career
Karl Johan Adlercreutz was born into a Finnish aristocratic family on April 23, 1757. In 1770, he was enrolled as a vice-corporal in the Finnish Dragoon Regiment, where he passed examinations in fortification and artillery sciences in 1773.
During the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790, Adlercreutz actively participated and commanded the Nyland Dragoon Regiment from 1796 to 1804. He was tasked with forming a regiment that bore his name in 1804.
Russo-Swedish War and Finnish Command
In the Russo-Swedish War of 1808-1809, Adlercreutz commanded the 2nd Brigade in Finland. After the capture of General Löwenhjelm, he assumed command of the Swedish forces in Finland and fought tenaciously but unsuccessfully to defend the region.
Arrest of King Gustav IV and Chancellorship
Following the war, Adlercreutz returned to Sweden, where he exploited public dissatisfaction with King Gustav IV's policies. On March 13, 1809, he and six officers arrested the King in Stockholm. From 1810 until his death, Adlercreutz served as State Chancellor without portfolio.
Military Campaigns under Bernadotte
During the 1813 campaign, Adlercreutz served as Chief of Staff to the Crown Prince of Sweden, Karl Johan (formerly Marshal Bernadotte). He actively participated in the battles of Grossbeeren, Dennewitz, and the storming of Leipzig. For his actions at Leipzig, he was awarded the Russian Order of St. George, 2nd Class, on December 28, 1813.
Campaign against Norway and Death
In 1814, leading the expeditionary corps' штаб, Adlercreutz fought in the military campaign against Norway. Count Karl Johan Adlercreutz passed away on August 21, 1815, in Stockholm.
